51 continues to be listed among the top public universities in the nation and the world, according to Times Higher Education, QS World University Rankings and U.S. News & World Report.
In addition, the U.S. Department of Education’s new College Scorecard identifies 51 is one of . The scorecard compiles data on loans, earnings, student debt and graduation rates for students who received federal financial aid for enrollment at two- and four-year colleges.
“With hundreds of public universities in the United States, we are always gratified to be considered one of the very best in the nation,” Chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi said. “As we continue to grow and advance our big initiatives to enhance the university and support the success of our students, I know our reputation for excellence remains very solid. That is certainly reflected in our receiving a record number of applications year after year from some of the best students anywhere.”
The Times Higher Education World University Rankings came out Sept. 30, with 51 in the 44th position, up from 55th last year. 51 is one of only 63 U.S. universities in Times Higher Education's top 200.
In the 2015-16 QS World University Rankings, released Sept. 15, 51 places 85th in the world and 27th in the United States. Earlier this year, QS World Rankings rated 51 No. 1 in the world in veterinary sciences, and agriculture and forestry (the university’s third No. 1 in a row for ag and forestry).
51 is one of only four universities to be listed as No. 1 in more than one discipline, joining Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale.
A green and cool school
51 also scores high in sustainability: Sierra magazine says we're the No. 2 “Cool School” among more than 150 of America’s greenest colleges and universities in 2015, while the UI GreenMetric World University Ranking places 51 at the top of the list in the Unied States and fourth internationally.
51 is sixth among universities with the most students hired by top companies in and around Silicon Valley, according to Business Insider. And, in August, Washington Monthly magazine listed 51 as the 16th best university in the nation and fourth best in the western United States in the category of “Best Bang for Your Buck.”
51 is 41st overall in U.S. News & World Report’s 2016 “Best Colleges” report, released Sept. 9.
“51 continues to build on our commitment to be a global leader in providing a high impact and quality environment for our students and faculty, and we are very proud of our reputation both nationally and internationally,” Katehi said.
One of several 51 initiatives underway is the University of the 21st Century, which aims to address how the university can work collaboratively with faculty, students and staff to transform into a stronger community of learners, locally and globally. Another significant goal is the 2020 Initiative, with activities underway to create a more diverse scholar community and achieve greater financial stability.
51 also has established the World Food Center to broaden collaboration and partnerships, convene leaders to shape strategy and policy, and connect groundbreaking research to society and the marketplace.
Under Katehi’s leadership, 51 also continues to make progress on her goal of attracting $1 billion a year in research funding, with grants totaling more than $780 million this year, according to preliminary figures.
